10/5/5 - winding down. we have relocated, updated, and reconfigured. we no longer offer miserable.com accounts to the public. also, since we relocated we forgot to change the mailing address on the sign-up form. if you sent us anything it was probably already returned to you by whoever is now at our old place. oops, our bad. we have been busy working on other more important projects. no, we didn't forget about you, we just don't care. we hope to revamp the site with some actual content one of these days. don't hold your breath. on second thought, hold your breath. 11/9/4 - nothing to see here. seriously, there's nothing exciting happening right now. we had some connectivity problems, changed our configuration a little bit, and are still right here. please disperse. 11/13/3 - passwords restored. for those of you smart enough to fill in the password field on your sign-up forms your passwords have been restored. for the rest of you email us and we'll send you a generic password to the email address you used on your sign-up form. for those of you passwordless freaks who no longer have access to your sign-up email you need to get in touch with us and work something out. 11/13/3 - full reinstallation. our resident BOFH has been working hard to upgrade everything. which means that things like the operating system, mail, web, ftp, etc will all be coming back to full power over the next couple of days. we'll update you here to let you know when things are mostly back to normal. and most importantly when you will be able to log back in. you will need to use the original password that you entered on your sign-up form since the password database has been reset. if you cannot remember your password send us an email and we'll email it to the contact email address on your sign-up form. if the email address on your sign-up form is no longer valid you will have to contact us some other way. as usual we can often be found on irc. all of your existing email, web, and shell files will be restored and hopefully we didn't lose any of your data. let us know if you're missing anything. not that it will help, since you're supposed to make your own backups, but it will give us a good laugh. 7/5/3 - offline for a few minutes. we had to change some electrical and phone outlets here, which required powering down the system and disconnecting its dsl line. everything is back to normal now. in other news, in case you haven't figured it out yet we no longer allow plain telnet to your shell account. please use ssh to get in. 7/1/3 - mail and whatnot. we fixed the problem with the outgoing mail and it's now taking one more quick hop through our isp. appearantly they needed to be able to cut down on people running mail relay servers and didn't tell anybody. also, our resident BOFH has revamped some spam filters so you should be getting less spam in your mailbox. 6/18/3 - outgoing mail blocked. appearantly our isp decided to block outgoing smtp and now none of our email is going out. email is coming in just fine, but if you've sent anything out in the last day or so then it probably didn't make it to its destination. I've emailed support about the issue but we'll most likely end up moving the box to another isp. this will of course mean delays over the next couple days as dns catches up. 4/4/3 - back on-line. we're back online for now. we are temporarily located on a dsl line so bandwith and services are limited. the basics like mail, web, and irc should still work. we have no reverse-dns so you won't show as miserable.com going out. hopefully we won't be here more than a couple months until we can find a free co-location spot that can be donated to the machine. if something isn't working let us know as usual. 3/18/3 - going off-line. miserable.com will be going offline as of March 28, 2003 until another co-location facility can be found. if you have any services dependant on this server then now is the time to move them elsewhere until we come back online. we are unsure at this time when we will be able to get back online. at the least we may be able to bring web and email back fairly soon on a temporary line. donations to help with the move are still appreciated, link to paypal at bottom of page. 1/21/3-1/22/3 - various quick reboots. somebody, somewhere on the net, hopefully noticed that we had quite a few quick reboots over the last couple of days. these were mostly of just the web server as we upgraded and installed some updates, but the shells did see a little action. let us know as usual if we broke anything. 3/14/2 - sub7 backdoor trojan spoofed from miserable. somebody reported to us that an attempt was made to gain access to their system through the sub7 backdoor trojan virus from miserable.com. this is simply not true. besides the fact that sub7 is a windows-based virus and miserable is a unix based system we have our firewall locking down all ports that are not common services. this would of course block sub7 as it uses port 27374 by default or other high random port numbers if configured. this was obviously somebody spoofing their ip to make it look like they were attacking from miserable. since the intoduction of raw sockets in windows xp it is very easy to spoof your ip. miserable.com probably seems like a good name to spoof to make others miserable. be assured that nobody at miserable.com is trying to attack your system. however, if you feel the need you can send us an email including all relevant info (type of attack, time, date, port#) for any attacks that seem to be coming from us. 1/21/2 - system down over weekend. you may have noticed that miserable was down for a few days over the weekend. we attempted to transition the system over to a faster scsi card and drive. what we didn't account for was that the current motherboard would not support the new scsi card. after frantically trying to figure it out we ended up having to upgrade the motherboard and cpu. so now we're running a lot faster than we used to be. for detailed specs visit the free account page. if you've ever felt like getting an account here at miserable then now is the time. those unforseen upgrades come out of our pockets. donations from existing users are also always welcome. since the operating system has been upgraded there may be a few things that aren't working. if you find anything broken just let us know and we'll fix it asap. one of the major changes was a switch to qmail from sendmail. this may effect you if you were using things such as procmail to filter your mail. 9/14/1 - anonymous ftp access disabled. we finally got tired of monitoring the anonymous ftp site for unauthorized use and simply disabled anonymous logins. an account has been set up for shared ftp access. please contact us through the normal means in order to get the new login from us. 9/1/1 - we now have a dedicated irc server! for those of you wishing to get in contact with miserable users and chit-chat the day away connect to irc server irc.miserable.com port 6667 with your irc client. this server is not attached to any other irc network so you won't be able to connect with other users on other irc networks such as efnet, undernet, or dalnet. 5/1/1 - attention users: users who have not sent in their sign-up forms have had their accounts disabled. it was clear to us that some of you are still using the system and have just forgot to send in the forms. you've probably noticed by now. (: please go read the acceptable use policy and then go fill out the sign-up form and mail it in. if you have a free account you may disregard the billing portion of the form. the important parts are contact information, your miserable user name, and your signature. you can get a hold of us now and promise to send in your form and we will reactivate your account while you snail-mail the form. all material copyright its respective authors. acceptable use policy
